TORBAY LOCAL COUNCIL ELECTIONS – 5th MAY 2011

St MARY'S with SUMMERCOMBE

Matthew James

I have lived in both wards of Brixham over the past 12 years and attended Churston Ferrers Grammar School. I studied Politics and Economics at Exeter University and now work supporting people with mental health issues to live more independent lives.

I am an admirer of the Big Society idea and believe that the only way to solve our economic and social problems, build a great community and bring the generations together is to give people of all ages and abilities a say on what happens to our town and for everyone to get involved in contributing to the community.

Because of this, over the past decade I have had a lot of involvement within the community, helping the Brixham Buccaneers, volunteering with the Ark Youth Centre and Teen Network Torbay Youth Forum and organising the Brixham Fun Days, Christmas Grotto's and Tea Dances with the Brixham Young Volunteers Project, a project which aims to bridge the gap between the generations.

I believe in and support the regeneration of Brixham, but it must be in line with local people's wishes and in keeping with our wonderful natural environment. We need cheaper housing to help single people and young families get onto the housing ladder, and we need a major focus on attracting and creating new businesses and much better paid jobs.

If elected, I'll bring a young fresh perspective to local politics, ensure the voices of all age groups are heard and work to bring the generations and community together.
